United Water
Mayodan Wastewater Treatment Facility
Mayodan, North Carolina
United Water and Mayodan have grown together for more than two decades. Since the company began operating the Mayodan Wastewater Treatment Facility in 1983, there have been several construction upgrades to the original 0.700-mgd tricking filter system. When it was expanded to a 1.25-mgd activated sludge facility in 1987,
United Water provided the new facility with start up and operator training. In 1995 the treatment system was expanded to 3-mgd and in 2003 it grew into a 4.5-mgd design system to support regional growth.
United Water played an active role in the planning and construction of the expansion. This included developing and implementing a sludge management program and an industrial pretreatment program or IPP. The latter is of particular concern both for the health and the vitality of the community which was founded as a mill town in the late 19th century and boasts a wide variety of light industry today.
With United Water’s help and efficient operations and management practices, Mayodan improved wastewater quality effluent and protected the receiving stream. The company is also poised to help Mayodan achieve future growth needs. As residential and commercial development continues in the surrounding Greensboro-High Point metro area, the demands on wastewater treatment grow, too. These challenges are made all the more important because of an aging infrastructure.
Nonetheless, United Water continues to gain every bit of efficiency from the system, while improving town services. This includes reducing the Mayodan’s electricity costs and meeting environmental goals of the
Roanoke River Basin.
As a result of its efforts, the company has received the Wilbur Long Wastewater Operator of the Year Award for outstanding treatment plant operations.
United Water provides water and wastewater services to 7 million people in the
United States. In addition to owning and operating regulated utilities, United Water operates municipal systems through public-private partnerships and contact agreements. |
