North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, the famed high-tech haven that is home to the likes of IBM, GlaxoSmithKline and Nortel Networks, is served by United Water. On July 1, 2005, United Water began providing operations and maintenance services to the Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant in Durham County, NC. The treatment plant serves the vicinity of Research Triangle Park. Located in Durham and Wake counties in North Carolina, Research Triangle Park is the largest research park in the United States. The 7,000-acre campus includes over 130 companies employing over 38,000 full-time workers.

United Water began its services as Durham County neared completion of the second phase of a $42 million construction upgrade and expansion of the Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project doubled the capacity of the plant to 12 million gallons per day. The construction efforts addressed significant operational, regulatory and service needs. Future construction efforts will further address these goals through upgraded residuals handling and beneficial reuse of treated wastewater.

Under the terms of the contract, United Water is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 12-mgd wastewater treatment plant, 10 pumping stations and 100 miles of collection pipes. In addition the company also oversees the administration and management of 23 permitted industrial pretreatment users. United Water also provides technical assistance regarding new industrial waste discharges or other significant changes in wastewater discharges.
